Flockworks has widened access and participation in community arts since 2006. We bring people together and help shape creative life in our coastal community – with exhibits, events, workshops, art & science, collaborative ventures with film, writers, dancers, and others, art in schools, and art out in the community.
Engaging children and youth has been a core thread from the beginning. In 2018, when Art for elementary children was cut from the Fort Bragg School District budget, Flockworks stepped up with our Art@Schools program focused on Dana Gray and Redwood School. Bridging the linguistic and cultural divide is a cornerstone for the role of our bi-lingual School Resource Artist to add more support for our Latino/Hispanic (48%) students and their families.
Against the challenges of Covid-19 in 2020, we sharpened our focus on the children in Fort Bragg. We found creative ways to steadily be there for children – from at-home art support to virtual classroom engagement. And in 2023 Flockworks expanded into full-time management of afterschool programming for the Fort Bragg Unified School District. We serve over 400 children and their their families each week at multiple sites in Fort Bragg.
Flockworks' focus, as we move forward, is on building creative communities through collaborative action.
We maintain an active presence in our rural coastal community with ArtPOP activities at monthly events. As we continue to deeply integrate arts into the daily life, "I love Art" is something we regularly hear from children, families, and teachers. It reflects the growing recognition of how the arts truly do matter – for socio-emotional balance, diversity of learning strategies, and creatively engaging the modern world.
